The Need for Sustainable Urban Mobility

Cities are engines of socio-economic development. Yet, increasing populations create challenging situations for urban transport in many developing and emerging economies. Traffic congestion has become a recurrent and severe problem in many cities with a negative impact on the life of urban dwellers through negative externalities such as traffic congestion, noise and accidents. There is need for a paradigm shift towards more sustainable transport systems.

The conventional approach to address urban transport has been to build more roads - that are being overwhelmed by increased traffic soon after they are built. There are increasing opportunities to move a new level for mobility.

  • Review of the Academy of Sustainable Urban Mobility 2017;
  • Introduce an alternative paradigm for urban mobility that seeks to improve accessibility by introducing more efficient, inclusive, safe, affordable and clean public transport;
  • Discuss innovative mobility solutions, such as Cable Cars, in conjunction with compact city planning - and elaborate their potential to enhance accessibility in certain urban contexts;
  • Seek collaboration and partnerships for joint capacity building efforts such as AoSUM 2018 (planned for 04/2018);
  • Promote participation among decision-makers for the next Academy, taking place in Vienna in April 2018.

The aim of this side event is to discuss sustainable and innovative urban mobility solutions and facilitate exchange of participants with like-mined. The side event will review the lessons learnt from the first Academy but will also seek collaboration and partnership for organizing future Academies with a broader range of supporting partners.
